Mt. St. Helens is not to be missed. Easily seen in one day, the scenery is still jaw dropping and the Park Service really got this right with their ampitheater. The above panorama shows a storm moving thru on the left, the valley and river from Mt. St. Helens in the middle, and the volcano still hiding behind the clouds on the right.
The side of the volcano blew out in 1980 totally flattening the forest for many miles around. The resultant eruption melted the snow on the mountain causing a mud flood for 40 miles down river and killing many people. The scientist manning the observatory also was killed from the blast. Note in the pictures the remaining down tree trunks all face in one direction.
